Maggie Alphonsi helped England end three successive final defeats as they clinched the Women’s World Cup with a 21-9 win over Canada in Paris on Sunday.
The St Albans-based star was one of four players that featured in the previous two final losses against New Zealand but she played a major part in helping England to their first triumph since 1994.
Tries from Emily Scarratt and Danielle Waterman, along with 11 points from Scarratt’s boot, ensured England lifted the trophy.
Saracens flanker Alphonsi could decide to end her international career at the top after their World Cup success.
Alphonsi tweeted: “Best feeling in the world is waking up as a World Champion after spending 11 years of my life trying to be one. Words can’t explain#WRWC2014
“Thank you for all the goodluck and congrats messages. Thank you also to everyone who travelled out to France to support. It’s been amazing!!”
