Harpenden conceded a late equaliser in their thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Chesham Reserves on Saturday in the South Midlands Division One.

The hosts' top goalscorer Harry Hunt almost gave the home side the lead in the first minute when Tom Collin whipped in a cross to the penalty spot but the forward's effort crashed against the post.

There were early warning signs for the visitors and Harpenden got the breakthrough in the 12th minute. Mark Hitchcock ran down the right hand side and whipped it into Hunt who cleverly back heeled it to Collin who placed it into the back of the net.

Three minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage. After good work on the edge of the box from Hunt, the striker laid the ball off to Anthony Burns who curled it over the keeper.

Harpenden continued to create numerous chances with Jake Collins and Hunt both going close. However, the hosts were made to pay for the missed opportunities, as Chesham were allowed back in the game. Jack Harris held the ball up well for the visitors before Chris Mason slotted the ball into the corner in the 31st minute.

The hosts quickly restored their two goal advantage though, as Hunt got his third assist of the match when he crossed to Nick Elliot who poked it into the net in the 34th minute. Chesham pegged Harpenden back again though as Harris made it 3-2 at half time.

Chances were few and far between in the second half. Harpenden had a few opportunities in the last 20 minutes to stretch their lead but couldn't finish the game off.

With the clock ticking down, Harpenden couldn't hold on to the three points as Chesham levelled with two minutes to go. Charlie Jones found himself just inside the area and made no mistake with the finish to snatch a point at the end.

Manager Danny Plumb said: "I am disappointed. Of course the conditions were bad but we are letting in too many goals."
