Townsend Bowls Club have two new coaches in the unlikely shape of husband and wife Bernadette and Clyde Martindill.

The pair both passed a rigorous training and assessment course run by Hertfordshire Bowls – the first time this has happened with a couple from the club.

After four years bowling at Townsend they both felt that the time was right to put something back into the club and the sport.

The couple said: “We both love bowling and for Townsend to have two more qualified coaches would, we felt, encourage new bowlers to join the club and take up the game.

“Bowls is easy to enjoy but difficult to get really skilled at. The best way to succeed is to be properly coached from the start.”

The new season starts at Townsend on April 18. One week later, on Saturday, April 25, is the first of two open days, when beginners and experienced bowlers alike will be welcome.

The Martindills have agreed to run their coaching sessions from 10am to 3pm free of charge. If you would like to participate then all you need is to bring flat shoes or trainers.
