Verulamians battled to a 21-13 home win over London French in Herts Middlesex One on Saturday.
A very blustery day dictated the pattern of play and with the wind in their backs the home side’s forwards were able to dominate territorially.
This helped them secure a 14-0 lead by half time through two forward instigated tries from Josh Lawrence and centre Ben Russell.
In the second half of the game, London French, with a set of smooth passing backs, tested Vees’ defence, but they held firm.
As tiredness began to show the French nibbled away at the lead and reduced the deficit to 14-8.
But in one of Vees’ rare sorties into the opposition’s half, Alex Ricci sped 40m up the wing, slipped the ball inside only to see a certain try halted in front of the posts.
However Verulamians winger Levi White roared in from the opposite wing and flattened the opponent to score another converted try and clinch the win.
London French kept pressing forward and in the dying minutes scored a try in the corner for the final play of the match.
Verulamians will travel to league leaders Kilburn Cosmos on Saturday.
