St Albans City are closing in on the appointment of their next manager but the club will not be rushed into making a decision.

Saints owner Lawrence Levy has been holding discussions with candidates this week.

Levy said: "There is no rush because we have one of the best young coaches around. We want to make sure we make the right appointment for the future of the club."

City are looking for a new boss following the resignation of joint managers James Gray and Graham Golds last month.

Head coach Harry Wheeler has steered the side to two wins in the last week after taking temporary charge. But it is believed the club are keen to appoint someone with more experience.

Speaking after the 3-0 home win over Margate on Saturday, Wheeler, 26, said: “I’m always up for it [the job]. Do I feel I could do it? Yes. Am I good enough to get the best out of the players? Yes.

“It would be very hard to turn down but at the same time with where I am right now in my position I’m not sure it would be the best thing for me. I would like to still be here and would love to be around and involved.

"I’d give everything I have done and more if it comes back and I’d take it as an experience and see what happens.

“I’d never say never but I’m keeping myself focused on my aims and goals in my future about where I want to be."

Wheeler's first game in charge resulted in a 5-0 win over Oxhey Jets in the Herts Senior Cup. The Saints followed this up with a much-needed win over Margate in the National League South at Clarence Park.

A handball by Ben Nunn resulted in a penalty for the visitors but Joe Welch saved Freddie Ladapo’s spot-kick.

City took the lead in the second half through Louie Theophanous' 12th goal of the season.

St Albans made it 2-0 when Theophanous set up Harry Crawford for his first goal at home. The Saints sealed the win when Sam Corcoran hit a superb strike in off the crossbar.

Wheeler said: “I’ve no doubt the players are too good to be where they are right now. If they keep going they will get out of it with the belief and work rate they showed."

“You can’t ask for a better start. Obviously eight goals in two games isn’t bad and two clean sheets.

“The main thing with me is to play with fun and freedom but have a continuous focus at the same time. The focus part will get us out of trouble by knowing when to play long and when to defend in the right areas. It’s about understanding when the game progresses and taking one situation at a time. If they do that then they’ll get out of it.
