St Albans City have announced Harry Wheeler will continue as caretaker manager as they have been unable to appoint a permanent boss.

City are looking for a new boss following the resignation of joint managers James Gray and Graham Golds last month.

However, despite revealing they were close to an appointment last week, the decision has been taken to keep Wheeler in place whilst the search continues.

A short statement on the club's website read: "Club owners John McGowan and Lawrence Levy feel that it would be unsettling for all at the club to go through another recruitment process at present and have been impressed by Harry’s willingness to step into the role of caretaker manager.

"We are all now looking forward to a period of stability during this busy and important stage of the season."

Speaking after the 3-0 home win over Margate last weekend, Wheeler, 26, said: “I’m always up for it [the job]. Do I feel I could do it? Yes. Am I good enough to get the best out of the players? Yes.

“It would be very hard to turn down but at the same time with where I am right now in my position I’m not sure it would be the best thing for me. I would like to still be here and would love to be around and involved.

"I’d give everything I have done and more if it comes back and I’d take it as an experience and see what happens.

“I’d never say never but I’m keeping myself focused on my aims and goals in my future about where I want to be."

The Saints didn't play on Saturday but host Maidenhead United on Tuesday.
