Harpenden Town climbed up to fifth in South Midlands Division One after a 1-0 victory at Winslow United on Saturday.

The success comes after a 6-2 victory over Southall the previous Thursday night at Rothamsted Park.

At Winslow, Harpenden went close after six minutes when a Harry Hunt shot was saved by the goalkeeper from close range in the only real chance of the first half.

It was the same in the second period in a tight fought game until Hunt took a corner in the 82nd minute and Ant Burns rose in a packed goalmouth to head the ball into the net with a rocket of a strike.

It was the midfielder’s second goal in two weeks with both coming from off the bench.

Harpenden hung on for victory and once again Jake McClean kept a clean sheet.

Manager Danny Plumb said: “It was a very professional performance. We kept a clean sheet and scored from a set piece which was very pleasing.

“It was a very effective effort and that’s another three points.”

Harpenden are at home on Saturday against Hillingdon Borough.
