St Albans City manager Ian Allinson believes his side will give themselves a chance of avoiding relegation if they can replicate their performance against Hayes and Yeading United.

The Saints clinched a third win in four games with a 3-1 victory at United on Saturday to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop.

City remain in the relegation zone but are just three points from safety after closing the gap on the sides above them.

Allinson said: "We've just got to make sure we're not running out of games. We're still in and around that little pack and we're catching them up.

"We've got to keep believing and we've got eight games to go. If we can get the same application, work rate and quality as today then we'll give ourselves half a chance."

The Saints dominated the game and could have easily scored more goals in their best display under their new manager.

Allinson said: "I think overall it was our best performance we've had since I've been here. I thought the 90 minutes were excellent and we went about our job really well. I think 3-1 flattered them and it could quite easily have been six or seven today."

The Saints came into the match with just one away win this season in the National League South.

But they doubled this tally with their victory, which was started by an early goal for the Saints.

Louie Theophanous set up the opening goal when his cross was headed in from close range by Charlie MacDonald.

Allinson's side were in control of the game and doubled their lead when MacDonald flicked the ball into the path of Theophanous and he fired home his 16th goal of the campaign.

MacDonald thought he had scored again before the break but the striker was ruled offside before finding the net.

The visitors added a third goal before the hour mark when on-loan Peterborough United winger Harry Anderson cut inside and rifled a shot past goalkeeper James Hamon.

Ismael Ehui scored a late consolation for the hosts but the Saints still ran out comfortable winners.

Allinson said: "It's something I've always demanded in any team I've managed. First and foremost we have to work extremely hard and harder than any opposition.

"If we do that I think the quality we've got in this side shines through. That has shown over the last couple of games and if we do that we're a decent side."

The Saints will look to build on their recent form this weekend with a trip to Concord Rangers.

Allinson said: "We know with Concord they will turn up whatever game it is and you know what you will get from them.

"They will put us under pressure, work us extremely hard and it will be a very tough game."
