There have been mixed fortunes for St Albans' Olympians in Rio De Janeiro.

Sprinter Jodie Williams' hopes of a medal remain alive after reaching the semi-finals of the 200m in qualifying on Monday, but Olivia Federici, and partner Katie Clark, are out of the sychronised swimming.

Williams posted a season-best time of 22.69 to finish 12th in qualifying, comfortably inside the top 24 cut-off point, and will now compete for a place in the final in the early hours tomorrow.

Speaking after the race, she said: “I am happy; I think ours was quite an easy heat but the closest in terms of times. I am happy with that run.

“My aim here is make the final so I definitely expected to get through the rounds. I am just happy to be through, that’s what the rounds are all about."

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Federici and her hopes of bettering a ninth-placed finish at London 2012 in the pool, as she and Clark ended 17th in the preliminary round.

The duo were just under 10 points behind the final qualifiers, after their free routine score left them playing catch-up in the technical round.
