Harpenden rooted to foot of Home Counties table


Harpenden are propping up the table after a one-wicket defeat to Banbury in Home Counties Premier Division One on Saturday.

Ben Frazer struck 55 off 51 balls as Harpenden were bowled out for 193 in 51.3 overs. The match was there for the taking as a fine bowling display from Frazer (five for 66) helped leave Banbury in trouble on 103 for eight.

It all looked so promising for Harpenden but an unbeaten 62 from Ashley Blanchard got Banbury out of jail. Harpenden will have to recover quickly from this setback as they face Aston Rowant on the Common in their next match.

Harpenden Seconds drew with Welwyn Garden City Seconds in a gripping Division Two encounter.

Harp had two runs docked from their total by the umpires at tea for a six which struck a sightscreen that was partially over the boundary line and was adjudged to be a four.

Sam Wiese top scored with 77 from 121 balls and Ed Washington hit 60 not out in Harpenden's total of 231 for four. Harpenden were staring at defeat when the opposition reached 231 for seven with three balls of the last over left but a team hat-trick with a bowled, run out and stumping rescued an unlikely tie.

The Thirds cruised to a nine-wicket win over London Colney in Division Three.

Colney were bowled out for 163 in 48.5 overs and Harpenden were never stretched in their run chase. Simon Wade ended unbeaten on 74 and Ollie Chinneck also struck 65 not out as Harpenden strolled to the target for the loss of just one wicket in just 28.4 overs.

Harpenden Fourths were held by Abbots Langley Seconds in Division Seven.

Navin Pancharatnam hit 65 and Teddy Peck struck 58 in Harp’s 285 all out. Abbots Langley ground out a result scoring 225 for six in 47 overs.

Harpenden Fifths beat Parkfield and Headstone Thirds by 175 runs in Division 12.

Iqbal Hussain was in excellent form hitting 87 in Harpenden’s total of 297 all out.

Parkfield were overwhelmed by Harpenden's bowling attack as they crumbled all out for 122.

Harpenden Sixths secured a five-wicket win over Bushey Thirds in a friendly.

After bowling Bushey out for 122 all out, Harpenden had few problems racing away to the victory.
