Harpenden retain survival hopes after Henley draw

Harpenden can still avoid relegation from Home Counties Premier Division One after drawing with Henley.

Harp won the toss and gave Henley a real fright after they restricted them to 27 for four in damp conditions.

Henley were grateful to Jonno McLean for an unbeaten century as he helped his side recover to post a total of 225 for five.

Pat Foster picked up two for 28 and Ben Mahoney claimed two for 54 but they undoubtedly missed the absent skipper Ben Frazer.

In the reply, Harpenden slumped to 56 for six but young batsman Ed Washington (35) followed his second XI hundred with another mature innings.

Foster battled to a score of 44 as they were relieved to survive on 140 for nine.

Harpenden need a comprehensive victory at Potters Bar for any mathematical chance of avoiding relegation.

Harpenden Seconds' promotion hopes nosedived after a frustrating draw with Redbourn in Herts Division Three.

Redbourn asked Harpenden to bat first forcing captain David Whiteley's men to make all the running.

A tremendous knock from the experienced Barney Francis (65 not out in 99 balls) led to a sensible declaration at the halfway stage on 188 for four.

Redbourn's batsmen never came close to summoning up a run chase as they closed on 62 for three when the rain fell.

The Thirds also drew with Bishops Stortford Seconds in Division Seven.

Joe Peck took four for 58 as Harpenden bowled out the opposition for 173.

Harpenden closed on 131 for eight with Duncan Gibson hitting 40 off 78 balls.
