Stoke’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Huddersfield on Tuesday night was not just notable for Juninho Bacuna’s spectacular own goal.

It also featured striker Saido Berahino’s first goal in 913 days, since his strike for West Brom in a 3-2 Premier League win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at five things that happened between Berahino’s goals.

Barack Obama was in office. It was not until November 2016 that Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States, with his inauguration a few months later. And the Brexit referendum was a few months away. Boris Johnson, then mayor of London, had only just declared his backing of the leave campaign in February 2016. And Prime Minister David Cameron was confident of staying – in the European Union and his job.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored 103 goals for club and country – and that includes when he was on corner-taking duty at Euro 2016, when Roy Hodgson was England boss and saw his side embarrassed by Iceland. Kane won the golden boot at his next international tournament, scoring six as England finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup.

Wenger out – Mourinho in

Arsene Wenger led Arsenal to the 2017 FA Cup for the last of his seven FA Cups. His reward included a new two-year contract, but his exit came in May 2018. Jose Mourinho, axed as Chelsea boss in December 2015, was appointed Manchester United manager in May 2016, days after Louis van Gaal had won the FA Cup with United.

Black Cats without bounce

Sunderland survived in the Premier League under Sam Allardyce in 2015-16. Four permanent managers later – including David Moyes and Chris Coleman – the Black Cats are showing no signs of bounce after falling into the Championship the following season and immediately dropping into League One.

Eddie’s England honeymoon

Eddie Jones’ England reign began with wins over Scotland, Italy and Ireland – on February 27, 2016. The Australian guided England to the 2016 Grand Slam and 24 wins in 25 Tests, but his star slipped with a run of five straight losses until winning in South Africa in the final Test of the June 2018 series.
