Harpenden men reached the quarter-finals of the County Team Championship by beating Welwyn Garden City 65-57 on aggregate over three rinks.

Rob Newby, Colin Driscoll, David Brooks and Tom Muir won 26-12 in the third and decisive rink, which was enough to secure the win.

The rink of John Williams, John Millins, John Osborn and Tony Redford were level at 18-18 before dropping five shots in the remaining five ends to lose 25-20.

Nick Muir, Noel Roberts, Trevor Tharby and Kevin Brazier were also beaten, 20-18.

In the Harpenden Over-60s Mixed Fours double rink, the two Harpenden teams were drawn against one another with the B team rink coming out on top 43-34 on aggregate.

The A team rink of Debbie Turner, Jack Blissett, Brian Driscoll and Roberts won 19-18 against Williams, Brooks, Linda Brooks and Janet Hubball.

However, the B team rink of Rob Newby, Tony Redford, Jan Holland and Linda Newby won 25-15 against the A team rink of Bob Howell, Colin Driscoll, Beryl Birch and Val Christiaans to reach the area semi-final.

Through to the semi-final of the National Mixed Fours are Dena Roberts, Jennie Redford, Tony Redford and Muir, following a hard-fought 24-18 victory against Potten End.

In the second round of the Ladies County Singles, Hubball and Linda Newby won their respective matches.

Hubball beat Rita Winsmore of Welwyn Garden City 21-17 and Newby overcame fellow Harpenden player Sheila Rider 21-7.

Lesley Tutt and Roberts could not follow that success up and were beaten by Marilyn Hedger and Joan Hair respectively.

In the Unbadged Singles third round, Birch defeated Dee Morrison of Hatfield 21-15 and Christiaans defeated Harpenden’s Diana Davies 21-1.

Val Thompson and Pauline Taylor beat Pat Stamp and Sylvia Pullen 25-18.

The Harpenden duo dropped a seven but recovered to pull away and win comfortably.

County Ladies Pairs results were mixed, with Jennie Redford and Turner, Linda Newby and Linda Brooks and Tutt and Christiaans winning against two other Harpenden pairs and a Hatfield pair.

Jan Holland and Sheila Rider, Beryl Driscoll and Williams lost however.

Harpenden won their mixed match away at local rivals St Albans 82-66.

Top rink was Jenny White, Tony Smith, Viv Dale and Linda Newby but a hot shot – when all of the side’s bowls score – was gained by Gordon Burrows, Angela Favell, Trevor Rabson and Jean Clark.

There was also a friendly win for Harpenden, who beat Potten End 93-48.

Cynthia Williams, Avery Hills and Linda Newby were the top rink.
