London Colney were dumped out of the FA Vase in the third round after a 1-0 home defeat to United Counties League side Holbeach United on Saturday.

In the Blueboys’ first attack Danny Fitzgerald set up Dan Power to drive in a deep cross from the right which saw Danny Steadman head behind for a corner kick.

As London Colney pressed forward again though, Holbeach quickly broke up the attack and raced down the other end and took the lead.

Matt Warfield sped away down the right wing where he squared the ball across to Lee Beeson and he fired a shot from 22 yards in off the underside of the crossbar.

The hosts tried to hit back quickly and Fitzgerald saw his firm low drive whistle past the far post. Power then set up Fitzgerald, but his shot was kept out by Nick Conroy.

Holbeach almost extended their lead at the start of the second half but Jake Duffy’s deflected strike struck the bar, with keeper Jack Smith well beaten.

The Blueboys pressed forward in search of the equaliser and Tom Smith put the ball into the box from the left but Elliot Bailey saw his header saved by Conroy.

Although London Colney had most of the play that vital goal just would not come to take the match to extra-time.

Their final chance fell to Fitzgerald but his effort deflected off a defender onto the outside of the post.

London Colney Reserves eased to a 3-0 win at Hoddesdon Town Reserves after a brace from Yasir Rasheed and one from Adam Halford.
