St Albans School's Charlie Broom stormed to victory in the recent International Tennis Federation Junior tournament in Sweden.

The 16-year-old, who was seeded second, battled it out with 63 other competitors to claim the boys singles title and did not drop a set throughout the tournament.

At the semi-final stages, Charlie was the only non Swede competitor who was still in with a chance of winning. He fought through a gruelling semi against Jonas Eriksson Ziverts winning 6-4, 6-4 before facing Karl Friberg in the final. He won the first set after a tiebreak and then cruised to victory in the second with a 6-1 thrashing.

Jonathan Gillespie, headmaster at St. Albans School, said: "Previous winners have included players of the calibre of Magnus Norman (runner up in the French Open in 2000), Oliver Golding (The US Open Junior champion) and Marion Bartoli (the 2013 Wimbledon champion), putting Charlie in exalted company.

"His victory was the result of endless hard work and determination and really puts St Albans School on the map for tennis. His dedication to his sport and his academic studies is to be commended, as he also achieved very strong GSCE results, including nine A* grades."

Broom was holding a tennis racquet soon after his first birthday, and was having tennis lessons at the age of three. With this victory he has increased his Under-18 international ranking to career-high 265 and will continue to play in tournaments worldwide.
