Harpenden teenager Max Baggio admits emerging from the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships as overall winner was the last thing on his mind before he produced a sparkling week on the slopes.

World Cup stars Dave Ryding and Alex Tilley graced Tignes last week – and 19-year-old Baggio proved that he is likely to follow in their footsteps.

He clinched a hat-trick of National Championship titles in the Super-G, Downhill and Giant Slalom events, but scuppered his chances of making it a complete set after abandoning the Slalom.

British number one Ryding was always likely to win that event, however, and after Baggio’s incredible consistency over the course of the week, he lifted the Sir John Ritblat Victor Ludorum trophy for overall victory.

“I’m very happy, I definitely didn’t think about it before I came here,” said Baggio, who also added National Junior Championship silver in the GS on Saturday.

“To have got it is brilliant and it’s always been one of the things I wanted to win.

“It was a bit annoying on Friday because I came out of the Slalom. In the second run I went out the gate and in the fifth gate my skis clashed so I fell on my head. But I’m fine after that.

“I’ll be heading home for a break, but next season I’ll see how it goes and hopefully get into World Juniors again. If I can qualify for the World Championships as well, that would be awesome.

“It’s been a very good championships and I put in a few decent performances. I didn’t feel like I was going to do this before I came here, so to have done it is the icing on the cake.”

Following the success of the Great Britain team at Sochi 2014 and with the support of Snowsport England’s national participation campaign GO SKI GO BOARD, it has been a tremendous year for British winter sports.

GO SKI GO BOARD started in September 2013 and more than 40,000 new people had taken at least one taster or coaching session through the campaign by the end of last year – and Baggio says it’s never too late to get involved.

“My sister attended a dry slope ski party at Hemel and I remember standing at the bottom and thinking I wanted to do it as well,” he added.

“I had been on family ski holidays before then but it kicked on from there, and it was a really good way to get involved. There are many ways nowadays for people to join in.”

As principal sponsor of British Ski and Snowboard, Delancey is proud to be able to provide British athletes with the support and training they require to continue to be a real force in winter sports on a world stage. Follow @teambss or visit www.teambss.org.uk.
