Harpenden Bowls Club maintained their successful campaign in the county competition this week.

In the men’s county pairs first round, hosts John Williams and Tony Redford beat Welwyn & District's Alwyn Challacombe and Chris Sherriff 23-13.

Redford beat Andy Kay of St Albans 21-16 at Clarence Park in the second round of the London and Southern Counties Lonsdale singles.

In the national senior pairs first round, Noel Roberts and Redford beat Welwyn & District's Barry Smith and Chris Sherriff 19-13.

In the national mixed fours there was a 25-16 win for Tom Muir alongside Woodie Donoghue, Jan Holland and Lesley Tutt, against David Brown’s team from Berkhamsted.

Harpenden were too strong for hosts Barton-le-Clay in the first round of the London and Southern Counties triples.

Williams was the lead, Rob Newby was two and Jack Blissett skip. The green was heavy but they got off to a good start and maintained their lead throughout and were surprised when Barton-Le Clay conceded after 13 ends with Harpenden leading 17-4. In the Tony Allcock second round, Harpenden beat Potten End on both rinks with the opposition conceded with four ends to play. The teams were David Brooks, Linda Brooks, Jan Holland, Noel Roberts, Redford, Woodie Donoghue, Tutt and Janet Hubball.

Harpenden and Batchwood met in their district league match. Harpenden won on three rinks with an overall advantage of 95-60. This gave Harpenden 65 points to their opponents' 15.

The top rink was Roy Polley, Barry Stratful, Mike Haslam and Roberts, who won 30-10.
