Harpenden edged past hosts Buntingford in the quarter-finals of the county team ten competition.

Buntingford started well with a victory over Harpenden's Tom Muir in the singles. Playing the pairs for Harpenden, Woodie Donoghue and Nick Muir had a see-saw game but went into the last end one behind. Holding one shot, Muir tried to remove the Buntingford second bowl with the last bowl of the game but was unable to do so and the game was halved.

The Harpenden four of John Williams, Noel Roberts, John Osborn and David Brooks came from behind and after 20 ends had a ten shot lead.

The game was decided by the Harpenden triple of Colin Driscoll, Kevin Brazier and Tony Redford who had also come from behind and it was all square going into the last end. In dark conditions Harpenden's skip Redford drew the shot with his last bowl which the Buntingford skip could not beat and victory was secured.

In the semi-final Harpenden will play Hatfield.

Noel Roberts and Lucy Ratcliffe have reached the last eight of the county singles. Noel Roberts was home to Chris Sheriff from Welwyn and District and won relatively easily 21-9. His next opponent is David Hoare of Baldock. Lucy Ratcliffe, who played Sue Maynard of Welwyn Garden City, had a much closer game, winning 21-18. Lesley Tutt was beaten after a very close match against Jill Grose at Ware while David Brooks lost against Andy Brydon of Townsend.

In the men’s triples second round, Brazier, Redford and Tom Muir beat Les Browns’ Welwyn Garden City triple 14-13. In the pairs second round, Alan Bostock and Redford beat John Webb and Terry Keny at Berkhamsted 23-20. In the first round of the fours, Driscoll, Rob Newby, John Williams and Redford were behind the whole game but came through to beat Keith Ames’ Welwyn Garden City four 18-16 on the last end of the match.

Harpenden played Welwyn Garden City in the district on four rinks. Two were won and two lost but their opponents won 84-61.

Top rink for Harpenden was Bob Howell, Trevor Tharby, Chris Linfield and Barry Hills.

The ladies played at the same venue for their district league game but lost on both of their rinks.
