Harpenden Town produced an excellent display in the Spartan South Midlands Division One to beat league leaders Risborough Rangers 4-2.

The win, which was secured by goals from Ben Warren, San James, Matt Sutton and Charlie Gould, is Town’s third in a row in the league and sees them move up to eighth.

Manager, Danny Plumb, was understandably delighted with his side’s commanding display and now wants Town to maintain their consistency.

He said: “It was a good result and we now need to get consistency in our performances and results.

“It is good to pull a string of wins together and move up the table. We need to build on that now and continue the progress.”

Harpenden started the match slowly and went behind after a Rangers cross eluded their entire defence and found its way into the net.

They almost hit back immediately, but Mike Davies was unfortunate to see his close-range header well saved by the Risborough keeper.

Despite trailing at the break, Town were far from out of the match and were gifted a route back to parity when Warren was pushed in the box.

He stepped up and converted the resulting penalty himself before a sublime solo strike from James, which he finished with delicate chip, gave them the lead for the first time.

The visitor’s refused to lie down though and another slice of fortune handed them a leveller as a corner deflected past the Town keeper.

Town were in no mood to let three points slip away, however, and a well-worked corner allowed Sutton to powerfully head home from 15 yards.

They sealed the win in style in the first minute of stoppage time as Gould controlled a long kick forward and unleashed an unstoppable drive from 30 yards.

Harpenden enjoy an extended break between now and their next match which sees them take on Harefield United at the Gosling Stadium on Tuesday.
