London Colney took a big step towards being crowned South Midlands Premier Division champions as they held Hertford Town to a 1-1 draw.

Hertford came into the game looking to cut a nine point deficit to the Blueboys, and knew anything less than a win would all but end their title hopes.

It fell to captain Greg Shaw to score the vital goal for Colney as he was on target for the hosts 102nd goal of the season.

Ollie Sharman was on target for Hertford, but his goal mattered little in the grand scheme of things as Colney secured a share of the spoils.

With a goal difference of 15 better than Hertford, Colney know three more points from their remaining four games should be enough to land the title.

They will hope to seal a top spot finish sooner rather than later, starting with a meeting against Colney Heath on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Harpenden Town’s chances of being crowned Division One champions are still alive and well after a comprehensive 4-0 trouncing of Ampthill Town.

Town were in the ascendency early on and werte ahead after 17 minutes when the prolific Harry hunt broke the deadlock.

The early breakthrough should have provided the platform for Harpenden to push on, but Ampthill provided stern resistance.

It took until the 65th minute for the hosts to double their lead when Michael Davis turned in.

Further strikes from Dwayne Duncan and Kyle McLeish added gloss to the scoreline on a productive day for Harpenden.

They sit four points behind league leaders Biggleswade with four games to play.

An away clash with Hatfield Town awaits on Saturday, before Baldock Town visit Rothamsted Park on Tuesday.
