RELIEVED Tottenham head coach Juande Ramos reflected on last night's solid League Cup win at Newcastle and vowed: "Our season starts now."

The Carling Cup holders started their defence in impressive fashion with a 2-1 win against fellow Premier League strugglers Newcastle United.

On Sunday Spurs - still searching for their first league win of the season - travel to a Portsmouth side that has shipped ten goals in two games.

Ramos told the club's official website: "You never know what is around the corner.

"The result does give us peace of mind but we'll have to see what happens in our next game at Portsmouth on Sunday.

"Portsmouth are strong at home, so it will be a test."

Speaking about last night's victory, he added: "We deserved the win.

"The first half was more equal and the two teams were at a similar level but we took the advantage in the second half.

"You know you need to win in the Carling Cup otherwise you are out of the competition and the players looked fit and had the confidence to win. The scoreline was good for us."
