Having heard all kinds of rumours about the Gardens of the Rose at Chiswell Green such as - they weren’t open to non-members, they weren’t open to anybody, the weeds were higher than the plants etc etc, I thought I would go along just to see what was happening.
I needn’t have been concerned – the gardens are open to everybody and they are just beautiful. To think of summer is to think of roses and the lovely displays are a tribute to our on-going love affair with roses and it is the most romantic of flowers. If you only have time to visit one garden this summer make it the Rose Garden and go there very soon. Roses are the star performers and with the summer sunshine they are at their peak, the colours and perfume just wonderful. You can wander through beds planted with roses of every colour and size, walk through 200m of elliptical pergolas interplanted with roses and clematis, a marriage made in garden heaven, or admire any of the 72 arches and try to visualise them in your own garden.
A few years ago the Royal National Rose Society had to sell off quite a lot of land and at that time the smaller gardens were completely redesigned and replanted. The paths were relaid and it is now easier to get around. Unfortunately a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ was entered into with the new Butterfly World over parking and this doesn’t seem to have held up. Temporary parking is in an adjacent field and there are doubts that this will continue and without adequate parking the gardens will have to close. What a dreadful thought – these gardens are a real asset to our locality. A time for all garden lovers to show their support.
After enjoying the gardens don’t forget to visit the tea-room and check out the sales area for a rose to take home with you. A nice touch is that they are packed in a pretty Rose Garden cloth bag that can be used for shopping afterwards. For further details check out their web-site www.rnrs.org.uk.
