Just when the Lib Dems must have thought they couldn't sink any lower in people's expectations, today's news makes matters considerably worse.
It's been revealed that two months before the election, the Lib Dems were planning to drop their key policy on ending tuition fees, in the event of a coalition.
At exactly the same time, the leadership was making explicit promises, signing pledges and generally wooing the student vote.
The reaction to this news nationally has been one of outrage amongst people who worked for, supported or voted for the Lib Dems. It seems certain to drag them even lower in the polls. And it will be interesting to see how that reflects on the local scene in St Albans.
The Lib Dems here have a relatively slim grasp on power, with a small majority. If a drop in votes means they lose a couple of council seats, things could get interesting.
