Taking an early walk this morning I felt like bursting into song with each step – it was warm, it was sunny and everywhere there was colour – the wild flowers on my favourite bank have really stepped up their energy and its now ablaze with pink and white dead nettles, violets, cowslips, daisies and even some patches of periwinkle.  In the gardens opposite the spring flowers are enjoying the sunshine and the blossom on various flowering trees is stunning.

On the downside to all of this is the litter that some people blatantly leave behind.  So sadly amongst the wild flowers there is a variety of drinks cans, take away cartons and plastic containers of various sizes that have been casually dumped.  What is wrong with people – why can’t they take their rubbish home or dispose of it in the bins that are provided by the council?

Tonight the clocks go forward and from tomorrow we have an extra hour’s daylight – it really heralds the beginning of summer.  This coincides with Mother’s Day, a key time for flower sellers when mothers all over the country will be given gorgeous gifts of flowers and plants, a lovely and thoughtful gesture enjoyed by so many of us.

But despite this spell of warm weather we still need to be prepared for the possibility of frost and colder conditions.  Unfortunately we can’t order our own weather so be ready with some kind of cover to protect vulnerable plants, horticultural fleece is ideal but old net curtains also work very well.  Despite the seemingly non-stop rain over the past few months check on pots and containers, they dry out very quickly and on warmer days are likely to need watering.
