During the last dispute in 2006 the EU took heed of this and decided that it needed to reduce its dependence on Russia as a matter of priority. Three years on, and Russia is once again throwing its energy weight around, and the EU, including the UK, seem to have done little to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

Geopolitics could well govern energy supplies in the future, both gas and oil - do we really want to be dependent on Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Russia for keeping our lights on and economy functioning? Moving as fast as possible to renewables is not just about being 'green'. It makes enormous amounts of sense from a national security perspective.

We moan about the weather in this country, but our island is blessed with wind and tides that could help reduce this dependence on imported energy.

Come on Gordon, you've hijacked a watered down version of the Green New Deal - please use this investment to increase our domestic renewable energy supplies as quickly as possible.
