This time of year

Posted on 10:39am Monday 14th May 2012

This time of year, the Jewish community is in the midst of a transitional period where we are recalling the Israelites transformation from slaves in Egypt to a nation at Mt Sinai. We count 7 weeks from Passover to Shavuot (Feast of Weeks). This countdown is called the Omer, and is seen as a buildup toward an amazing event, the receiving of the 10 commandments and Bible, which ushered in a new era for the Israelites. My community here in St Albans is also counting down with great anticipation the opening of our first permanent home. We have been counting down for significantly more than 7 weeks, yet the anticipation is no less exciting. This moment will see us transform from a wandering community, nomads in our own town, to taking a giant leap forward in our development as a community. This building represents years of investment in more than just money and time, but a deep introspective process of where we want our community to be, and how we want to evolve. While we see a change coming, it is not going to fundamentally alter WHO we are as a community, only the way in which we express those values. Our identity will remain intact, but the manifestation of that will change as we enter the next phase of our history, just as the Israelites remained Israelites after Mt Sinai. I look forward to welcoming you into our new home.

A May Day for jobs

Posted on 9:28am Wednesday 25th April 2012

For many, the merry month of May marks the start of spring. But May 1st is also traditionally a celebration of work. International Workers’ Day is widely enjoyed as a public holiday, though in Britain, where this has been the case since the 1970s, festivities tend to evoke memories of ancient folklore rather than reflect on the pleasure and pain of toil.

The water of life

Posted on 4:33pm Thursday 23rd February 2012

If it’s not raining outside at the moment don’t feel too pleased. Southern and Eastern England is experiencing the worst drought for almost 40 years. Without a wet spring and summer severe restrictions on domestic water usage might be introduced, while street stand-pumps could once again be commonplace. Yet any inconvenience we suffer in this country pales in comparison with the kind of water problems that bring death to people in many parts of the world.
