No one likes to wait. Whether it’s the Christmas queue in the Post Office, holding on for a hard-pressed call centre operator, or waiting to hear from St Albans or Watford hospitals about that longed-for operation, it’s seldom much fun.

And it’s probably because you feel so powerless.

There’s no way you can speed up the queue, make things happen faster or put an end to the frustration. The insurance company say your call matters to them, but you’re really not that sure.

But maybe there’s another way to look at waiting.

With Christmas rushing towards us, the church calendar puts in place a kind of airbag to prepare us for its overwhelming impact. It’s called Advent and it’s a season of waiting, of getting ready for the massive celebration of Christmas.

Churches have come up with special ways to mark the season. St Paul’s in St Albans has a giant public Advent calendar designed by a local artist. St Mary’s, Redbourn, has organised an Advent calendar at different locations around the village.

It’s all about making use of the waiting, helping us to use the waiting time as reflecting time, a time for ‘going within’ ourselves.

Only then can we make sense of the waiting. It’s a time to prepare to celebrate the coming of God as a human, to live on earth, to die and rise again, so that everyone has the chance of eternal life.

It’s a truth worth waiting for.
