The other day my cleaner  and I were comparing notes on our Christmas dinners.  I had enjoyed a New Zealand feast, to which I had not been allowed to contribute anything , around a huge table laden with  New Zealand’s finest, sun shining,  many relatives, much jollity and good will. By contrast my cleaner  had volunteered to help a serve a Christmas dinner, organised by a charity, for St Albans people who would otherwise have gone without.

Although she only expected to help out, Jan was the only volunteer who had a clue about cooking. She arrived to find two huge turkeys, still wrapped and frozen, and nothing else except a pile of vegetables, some custard powder and a pile of puddings.  No fat, foil, butter, cream, ice cream, herbs, condiments or kitchen equipment. Being the hero she is, however, she set about to defrost the turkeys, sent people shopping for the essentials that had been missed, and organised teams to prepare the vegetables – teaching them how to peel a sprout and peel a carrot as she went.

By some miracle, a full roast meal, with turkey, (carved with  fork and  bread knife) lashings of perfectly cooked vegetables, and complete with  Jan’s finest gravy was served to 30 happy people, followed with puddings, custard and ice cream.  “ Better than last year’s hotel dinner!” they said.

I said:  “There was an angel in that kitchen.”  Amid peals  of laughter, she said “Oh, I had such a good time.  I can’t wait to do it again next year!”

I wonder who had the better Christmas?
