A fellow volunteer at our preserved Signal Box and garden at St. Albans City Station lost his gold wedding ring.

This was disastrous, given its sentimental value, but miraculously, he and a colleague found it a week later!

How often have we all lost something valuable and never found it, or hidden something expensive for safekeeping and then forgotten where we put it! Many treasures have been found over the years at Verulamium – dumped, lost or deliberately hidden?

The Bible talks of a lady who mislaid a valuable silver coin, and greatly rejoiced when she later found it; a man who unearthed some treasure in a field, but buried it again until he had enough money to joyfully buy the field; and still another man, a merchant, who came across a pearl of high value, and saved until, with enormous pleasure, he could afford to buy it.

Christians like me have discovered a treasure that gives us peace of mind, freedom from the trials of 21st Century living, and an eternal inheritance that continues after we depart this world.

We consider this has an inestimable value beyond all earthly riches. Where did we find it? For some, in Church; for others, in the Bible; and some through an experience of the Holy Spirit.

It’s a step in faith, but worth more than any satisfaction the world can provide. Perhaps now is the time to start searching?
