There has been much in the press of late about mega-sums of money.

First we had some rather large salaries paid by the BBC. I now find my mind quite distracted whenever I see such people on the box.

Then we had a footballer who seemed to be worth an amount so large that I cannot get my head around it.

St Albans City were not quite in the running for him so I doubt we shall be seeing his skills in these parts.

That was followed this week by an unseemly prize on offer in a lottery … and so it goes on.

Money – lots of it. It seems we all want it.

We compare our own salaries and savings to what we hear others receive. We marvel; we are jealous.

But then I consider two children in Lusaka, Zambia whom I sponsor so they can get an education.

Christ Church in St Albans have paid for classrooms to be built and children to be schooled – members have been out to help with the work.

13,000 children across Zambia are reported to live on the streets, some as young as six. Over 1,000 of them also sleep there.

Let’s not compare ourselves to BBC presenters or international footballers, but to people like these.

Then I, and all of us, might realise just how rich we are.

Jesus said more about money than almost any other subject. I wonder why.
