Back in 1994, when social media had not been thought of, and the internet was in its infancy, a group of local Christians launched the Beds and Herts Churches Media Trust.

Its aim was to encourage churches in St Albans, Harpenden and across the two counties to ‘make friends’ with their local media and improve their communications.

As a founding trustee and the Trust’s chair from 2000 to 2004, when I stood down, I’ve been thrilled to see how the Trust and its supporters have been helping local churches.

Its successes included organising 21 training days and conferences with almost 400 delegates attending, making grants totaling more than £3,000 for a range of media and communications projects and helping more than 100 churches launch their websites.

The Trust also organised media competitions for the most ‘media-friendly’ churches in the two counties. The winners included churches in St Albans and Harpenden.

Now, after 23 years, the charity’s trustees have reluctantly decided to discontinue the Trust’s operations. Times change and the needs of churches and their communications evolve.

As the curtain comes down on the Media Trust, I’d like to pay a personal tribute to all the trustees who served faithfully over the years. And to thank all the denominations who supported the Trust’s work.

The Trust passes on the baton to others who will work to make sure that churches and Christian groups continue to raise their game when it comes to communicating.
