What is the point of religion in our post modern, mix and match, well educated society - especially as it is now just another consumer choice?

In my experience, a great number of people, young and old, both within and without the Church, are working to make a positive difference to their lives and to the lives of others.

The Foodbank is a prime example of our local churches working together to fulfil the Jesus message of feeding the hungry.

The additional provision of a newly created overnight shelter is another example of local churches responding together to offer protection to the homeless on the coldest of winter nights.

And thankfully, hospitality, compassion, care of the poor and welcoming strangers are central pillars of all the great religions represented in this area.

That local churches are continuing to work together with other faith communities and secular organisations to welcome Syrian refugees should be a cause for celebration for us all.

Such social justice was central to the life of Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth so why are generations missing from many of our local (and national) churches?

What is it that we are failing to communicate successfully to members of the compassionate community beyond our church fellowships – people who similarly continue working for the common good?

Christians must never abandon our compassion for those who are marginalised but perhaps we need to communicate more effectively with those who are building a future fit for all regardless of the religious or secular labels that they wear?
