Pantomimes are all about transformation stories. Here in St.Albans we can enjoy the story of Aladdin, a street urchin who finds a magic lantern so that his cirumstances changed instantly, despite the baddies' effot to thwart him.
The story of Cinderella is an even more obvious transformation story. A touch of the magic wand and "You shall go to the ball ! " We enjoy the pleasure of indulging in an unreal world where bad circumstances are always turned to good !
Pantomime and Jesus appear to come from totally different worlds, fantasy, and reality. But wait a bit !. In the Bible we read that "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation", in other words, he is transformed.
This promise of Transformation is what the coming of jesus is all about. This Jewish man worked as a carpenter in Israel until he was about 33, and then revealed he was God's son, made human. When he was crucified he took on all the bad that infests our lives, so that he could free us from the punishment due, and start to transorm us. This is still happening today.
No, it isn't at the wave of an abracadabra stick ! It might not be instant and it doesn't mean that transfromed people are by any means perfect - but now, world-wide, Jesus is changing people. Some even suffer terrible persecution for their faith, and some have it easy, as here in Britain.
