Real Generosity

Posted on 11:15am Friday 8th April 2011

It’s hard to imagine what daily life is like in Japan after a tsunami and two earthquakes or in Wellington, New Zealand following the earthquake there. This has not prevented any of us from making a really genuine, compassionate response to their suffering.

Your questions to God

Posted on 12:22pm Wednesday 16th March 2011

After last week's "Your Questions" presented by Radio Verulam at the Maltings Arts Theatre, I wondered what questions we would ask of God, if Jesus was on the panel.

After 21 years on the early train from St Albans into London, I have swapped three hours of commuting for two short walks. What should I do with the extra time available?

Christianity and Politics

Posted on 4:22pm Friday 25th February 2011

Our attitude towards money is a window into the soul. How we use our wealth is a fundamental component of our spiritual life. There are those who say that the pulpit and politics should never meet. In reply I quote Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “I don’t know which Bible you are reading.” With this in mind I am greatly concerned with the Prime Minister's recent statements that public services are to be put out to tender. Evidence over the past 15 years demonstrates that contracting out is not necessarily value for money: consider the London Underground and PFI failures in schools and road building. But my greatest concern is the policy impact upon democracy. If services are contracted out, nothing will be changed at election times. If I and sufficient others decide that we do not like the way in which the Government, local or national, or our elected representatives are performing, we can vote them out of office. But a public service contract with a business or charity will outlast any democratic election regardless of how badly such a contract is being carried out. Businesses have a primary concern for shareholder value: profit before the needs of the people supposedly served by the contract holders. At a time when democracy is being sought and fought for across the Arab world, we who are followers of Jesus have a responsibility to speak out on behalf of all who will be adversely impacted upon by such undemocratic 'out to tender' ideology.

In the weekly Torah portions that Jews have been reading these past few weeks, the narrative contains the sequence of construction of the Mishkan, or Tabernacle, that the Israelites are commanded to construct so that the Presence of God may dwell among the people.

Listening for the King's speech

Posted on 2:42pm Sunday 30th January 2011

‘The King’s Speech’ richly deserves all the awards and honours given to it. It’s a superb film, and the crowds that have flocked to see it at cinemas across the world have emerged well entertained. Certainly, the audience I saw it with at the Hatfield Galleria had a good time.

It was the last few minutes of a good trip visiting churches in the Moscow region. Genny drove me to Domodedovo airport and we said our goodbyes, see you soon – all the usual things we say on such occasions.
