Our parish priest, Father Charles, told us last week that when we manage to forgive others for hurting us, then we also give ourselves an inner peace. We let go of the anger.
Great! I had not really thought of it in that way before. I personally find it really hard to forgive. I want to forgive but something inside seems to block the flow of unconditional love. Yet, I watch the news and wonder why there is so much fighting in what seems to be every country on this planet! There is so much hatred and revenge. So much hurt. So little understanding.
And that’s me! When I am hurt, I shut down and freeze. I choose not to understand the other side. I like to think that my heart is warm but it’s partly frozen. To thaw it out means to lose pride and convey the raw love of a child.
Father Charles says that to forgive is to let go. Let go and be at peace. So I will! I will stop sweating the small stuff, choose to be unconditional and to understand. And then perhaps I might even stop screaming at the news-reader about the lack of world peace!
