Fourways present Much Ado About Nothing
Much Ado About Nothing written between 1598 and 1599 is Shakespeare’s most frequently performed comedy. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship. The play has been staged in any number of backgrounds and settings, but our production is loosely based in Sicily during the 50’s and so Don Pedro and his followers are Mafiosi rather than soldiers – though as the story unfolds that becomes an irrelevance, because this play is more about relationships and love, centred in particular on the ‘merry war’ between the protagonists Beatrice and Benedick and not war itself!
