FIRST performed more than 160 years ago at La Fenice Opera House in Venice, La Traviata is one of the most popular operas ever written.

Now Amande Concerts is bringing its production of the classic performance to the Alban Arena next month.

Featuring a 30-strong live orchestra and impressive cast, the show promises an enthralling rendition of the tragic tale about morality, sacrifice and society.

La Traviata literally means 'fallen woman' and its title refers to the central character - the courtesan Violetta Valéry.

The story, which is based on an earlier play by Alexandre Dumas, explores 19th Century French society and morality and features the renowned soprano solo aria Sempre Libera at the end of Act 1.

Just one of the many concerts programmed for the Alban Arena's Autumn season, La Traviata will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Alban Arena, Civic Centre, St Albans, Thursday, September 24, 7.30pm. Details: alban-arena.co.uk
