Herts Fire was inundated with hundreds of calls for flooding, electrical fires and rescues last night as torrential thunderstorms washed out the county.
Houses and businesses were hit by the storms in St Albans, with fire crews attending incidents in Harpenden, London Colney and across the city.
St Albans crew extinguished an electrical fire in a road bollard that was on fire due to the rain on Sandringham Crescent.
In several cases the fire service could only give advice as there was nowhere to pump the water away.
All fire crews in the area were kept busy throughout the night, with Herts Fire Control at one point having to cut off radio communications because of the number of incidents being called in and attended.
