One St Albans church has hit on an unusual way of backing Tearfund’s national ‘No child taken’ campaign designed to put an end to child trafficking.

Earlier this year members of Christ Church on the New Greens Estate were given five pounds and asked to invest it to produce an income which could then be given to the project.

So far over £2,000 has been passed on to Tearfund with the aim being to see this total rise significantly.

Trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world.

It shatters the lives of 1.2 million children every year, along with their families.

It is driven by poverty. With little food to eat, people in desperate situations are easily tricked by offers of work with a good income.

The campaign works through local Third World partners to set up farmers’ groups, establish self-help groups and offer business starter kits.

There is also a programme of awareness training, vigilance committees facilitated by church volunteers and legal support.

Christ Church members have invested their five pounds in a variety of ways from buying produce and making marmalade for sale to hiring a site for a day to let out for car parking.

Christians there see the five pound seed capital idea as one way in which every church member can get involved and contribute to the campaign.

Through the Tearfund project the congregation at this Church of England New Greens church are making a difference and helping to stop a global form of modern-day slavery.
