A major St Albans road has been closed and four taken to hospital after an accident.

Emergency services are at the scene in Watford Road after a two car collision involving an ambulance and a Volkswagen Polo.

One eyewitness reported seeing two women being cut out of a car and being taken away in an ambulance.

They said the ambulance was on its way to treat a patient when it hit a car that pulled out of St Stephens Avenue to turn right.

The road is currently closed at the junction with St Stephens Avenue and Abbey Avenue.

Jake Asby said on behalf of East of England Ambulance Service: "One of our ambulances was involved in a serious RTC with another vehicle in St Albans at around 10am this morning.

"The ambulance did not have a patient on board but was responding on blue lights to an emergency 999 call at the time of the incident.

"That patient has been seen and cared for by a paramedic.

"All emergency services are on scene and are treating four patients – two members of the public and two members of the ambulance service.

“We are providing full support to the immediate family of our staff involved, and will be assisting our police colleagues with any resulting investigations.

"We’d like to express our sincere thanks to our fellow ambulance colleagues who provided care to all four patients at the scene, and our police and fire colleagues for their support.”

The two members of staff in the ambulance have been taken to Watford Hospital, one with a chest injury and another with minor injuries.

The field at Marlborough is being used by two air ambulances.
