The closer we get to the EU referendum, the more it seems that serious discussion goes out the window.

Both sides are exaggerating and manipulating rather than debating. That is sad because these are serious issues.

Christ Church, St Albans are arranging an evening this week designed for church members who are interested or confused (or both!). Other churches in St Albans and Harpenden will be doing the same.

The aim is to explore issues “with no hidden agendas except trying to seek the truth where it can be found.”

But what is truth in this debate?

We are all being given the opportunity to take part in a decision that will significantly affect our lives for years to come.

But are the real issues about economics or border controls or sovereignty?

What will the eventual result actually tell us about our understanding of these matters when no one seems to know for sure just what will happen either way?

Perhaps it is a picture of our present culture where truth is so often seen in relative rather than in absolute terms.

However Christians vote on 23rd June, and no doubt like everyone else they will come down on both sides, they believe that truth does exist in the person of Jesus Christ who made the astounding claim that he was the truth.

That may sound completely at odds with society today, but I find it reassuring.

Especially when I can see so little certainty in the EU referendum roadshow.
