Books for your Desert Island

In January, David Beckham was the castaway on the 75th Anniversary edition of the popular Radio 4 programme, ‘Desert Island Discs’. In case you haven’t heard this programme; a celebrity is interviewed and asked to choose 8 ‘discs’, recordings, usually of music, to take with them to a fantasy tropical desert island, together with a book, and a luxury item of their choice. They are also given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and the Bible (or another religious work),

Last month, in a 12th cave of the Qumran Caves of the Judean desert, fragments identified to come from the Dead Sea Scrolls, were found. These were first discovered 60years ago, amongst which were many biblical texts some dating from the last three centuries BC.

Many people will know the Bible stories of David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lion’s Den and the Feeding of the Five Thousand, but may not be able to find them in the Bible.

 Help is at hand!

SS Alban & Stephen Catholic Church in Beaconsfield Road has arranged for 4 talks to be given by the Catholic Bible School, on different aspects of the Bible. The talks are from 8-9pm starting on Wednesday March 8 and on the following 3 Wednesdays.

Please join us for tea or coffee before the talks, at the Parish Centre attached to SS Alban & Stephen Church from 7.30pm.

The Bible is not just for castaways on the ‘Desert Island’.
