I looked up from my computer. It was 9.15 in the evening and there, in full glorious colour against dark clouds, was a wonderful rainbow, although not even a drop of rain! Amazing!

I looked up from the piano lesson. There was a female wood-pecker, going at the peanuts as if her life depended on it.  Well, her baby did depend on it, and I even heard its persistent chirps up in the apple tree, which I recognised courtesy of my foodbank friend’s mobile.

Nature!  What an antidote to our national stress, our heart-ache over high rise flats, our fear of terrorism. But where did nature come from? As a Christian I believe God is the creator, even though sin coming into the world has messed it up so that at times it seems, as the saying goes, “red in tooth and claw”.

Seeing the life in God’s creation sometimes makes me laugh.  I have several self-set sunflowers in my garden, one actually growing in a round hole in the trunk of that same apple tree. They are just the outcome of dropped bird-seed !

I am in awe of the highly complicated and functional design of even the smallest insect.  How could all this come by accident?

With everyone else, I agonise over the evil, the disharmony, and the stress of our world, but sometimes I just need to listen and look and be quiet before what I believe is God’s creation.
