An investigation has been opened after a pensioner died after falling from the roof of a football stand.

Clive Churchhouse, 71, of Redbourn, was repairing the roof of the stand in Clarence Park – the home of St Albans City FC – when he fell last Tuesday morning.

The East of England Ambulance Service was called just after 10am and sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and an air ambulance to the scene. Police officers also attended.

Mr Churchhouse was flown to St George’s Hospital in Tooting by air ambulance but sadly died.

Born in St Albans, Mr Churchhouse was one of the club’s longest-serving supporters, often driving the team and fans coach to away games.

Club chairman Lawrence Levy said on behalf of the club: “We are all completely devastated by the news. Clive was a much loved character around the club with a big personality who regularly helped out at the ground and on away trips with the team.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Valerie, daughter Sallyann, son Keith and his grandchildren, as well as his wide circle of friends at this very sad time.”

Former co-manager Graham Golds tweeted: “Very sad to see the news about Clive Churchhouse, I’ll never forget his unwavering support of Jimmy Gray and I.”

Debbi White, head of community services at St Albans City and District Council, said: “The council is the enforcing authority for health and safety at leisure facilities such as sports grounds in the district.

“We are therefore carrying out an investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

“The stadium is owned by the council as trustee but licensed to the football club, which is responsible for maintaining the buildings.”

The death is currently being treated as non-suspicious and officers are preparing a file for the coroner.

A match due to take place between St Albans and Luton Town FC later that evening was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Pre-season fixtures against Watford and Dagenham and Redbridge were postponed due to health and safety investigations at Clarence Park.

A JustGiving page has been set up to raise money for a memorial in Mr Churchhouse’s memory.
