Elderly parishioners are having to foot the bill after “uncaring, irresponsible” idiots dumped piles of hazardous asbestos in a church car park.

Reverend Linda Williams and her flock gathered for a Bank Holiday joint parish service at All Saints Church in Batford on Sunday, August 27.

However they were dismayed to find an asbestos garage roof broken up into pieces and left piled in the car park.

“Some uncaring, irresponsible idiots have broken up the asbestos roof of their old garage and dumped it. I only hope they were wearing a mask and protective clothing as the asbestos is in pieces and broken so small that it is in plastic carrier bags too,” said the reverend.

“It's got to be someone local as they knew just where to leave it in the car park so they wouldn't be seen. Not many people know that land is that accessible to vehicles and it’s screened by trees and foliage. I walked straight past it and didn't notice until someone told me.”

Rev Williams added:  “We are a poor church who've just had a grant from the Harpenden Trust to help us renew our hall floor so we can put on more community social events.

“This week and next is the new term for the pre-school, two dance schools, three baby and toddler groups, Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups. But all these people, especially children's and babies' health and safety is at risk through these idiots who were too lazy and tight-fisted and uncaring of the danger they put us all in to dispose of this asbestos properly.

“Our membership is very elderly and now they are going to have to find the money to pay the expensive cost of removing this fly-tipped asbestos.”
