A woman thought to have been hit by a car in St Albans last night (Thursday) has died.

The victim, believed to be in her 70s, was found lying in Camp Round with serious head injuries at around 8.20pm.

Despite the best efforts of police officers and paramedics, she died at the scene.

There were no vehicles at the scene on police arrival and investigations are being carried out to establish the circumstances around the incident.

Detective Inspector Chris Puddy, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this very difficult time and they are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

“We are currently treating the incident as a fail to stop collision and are still appealing for anyone with information about what happened to please get in touch with police straight away.

“Have you come across a vehicle which has suffered fresh, unexplained damage or noticed anyone acting suspiciously since yesterday evening? Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could greatly assist our enquiries.”
