The deadline for people to register for the annual Holocaust memorial service is quickly approaching.

St Albans District Holocaust Memorial Day service is held every year on January 27.

People in the area need to register to attend by Monday, January 22.

The service will be hosted by the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans Cllr Mohammad Iqbal Zia.

Cllr Zia said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to remember the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution as well as subsequent genocides around the world.

"Millions of people have lost their lives a result of these atrocities or been forced to flee their homes.

"Join us to reflect on the past and to highlight the importance of tolerance and respect in our society.”

During the service, there will be stories about Holocaust survivors and how children that survived that survived the Holocaust were brought to the UK.

Film producer Sophie Shard will also discuss her motivations for making the BAFTA nominated short film “Kitty’s Fortune”, a film about St Albans Holocaust survivor Kitty Hart-Moxon and her first night at Auschwitz.

Some local Rabbis will be addressing attendees and candles will be lit in memoriam to those who were killed.

For those attending, they are asked to bring a button for the B’s Button project being organised by students from Lakes School in Windermere. The project is meant to collect 1.5m buttons to represent each child that was killed during the Holocaust.

Anyone still wishing to register for the service must send an email to mayoralty@stalbans.gov.uk or call the 24-hour answerphone at 01727809544.
