WHILE maths and food may appear to be as different as chalk and cheese, staff at Shire Catering have found their contribution to Maths Year 2000 has won them a marketing award.
Shire Catering, which caters for almost all of Hertfordshire's schools, was presented with the award by the Local Authority Catering Association (LACA) after it initiated a marketing programme that not only encouraged pupils to enjoy their food but also aided their learning of nutrition and numbers.
The past year has seen Shire launch a range of fun events aimed at raising numeracy standards in schools, including healthy eating themes, cookery demonstrations, board games and a Big Book competition.
Shire's general manager, Bob Heaton, said: "The initiative came from a desire to develop a marketing concept that had educational commitment."
