Andre Carrillo scored a stunning volley as Peru beat Australia 2-0 in their final outing at the World Cup.

The strike, which was the first scored at a World Cup by Peru in 36 years, arrived after 18 minutes as Paolo Guerrero raced clear on the left and sent a deep cross to the back post.

Carrillo, who spent last season on loan at Watford, barely had to break his stride before firing back across goal and into the bottom corner with a fierce drive.

The goal saw Peru take the lead in a World Cup match for the first time since a clash with Iran in 1978, a match which also marked their last win in the competition.

They doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half when Guerrero reacted first to a loose ball in the box to swivel and scoop into the net via a deflection.

With their elimination from the World Cup already confirmed due to back-to-back defeats against Denmark and France in their first two games, Peru had little but pride to play for heading into the match.

They could, however, take solace from a win which saw them climb off the foot of group B and finish their campaign third.

Both Peru and Carrillo have impressed in moments during the tournament and but for some wayward finishing, they could easily have reached the last 16.

With Carrillo having reached the end of his loan with Watford, the winger’s future remains somewhat up in the air ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

A fee of £15 million has been reported as enough to lure him away from Benfica permanently, but that figure seems steep for a player who scored once in 28 apperances for Watford last season.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Everton where he would join up with former Watford boss Marco Silva once more
