Politicians calling for TfL to rezone Watford stations have appealed for more people to sign their petition before they present it to the Mayor of London.

Watford Liberal Democrats want to have the town's stations brought into Zone 6, bringing the town in line with other places a similar distance from London such as Epping, where commuters pay £1,000 a year less than their Watford counterparts.

Watford's Metropolitan Line Station is in Zone 7, Watford High Street and Bushey stations are in Zone 8 and Watford Junction Station is in Zone W.

Lib Dems will hand the petition, which currently has 4,500 signatures, to Mayor Sadiq Khan in a plenary meeting of the London Assembly on September 6.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: "When this petition is presented directly to the Mayor of London in September, we need as many signatures as possible to let Sadiq Khan know that Watford residents want fairer fares now.

"By bringing Watford stations into Zone 6, we could help people travelling out of Watford and into Watford to work, which would help our thriving local economy and put money back into Watford residents pockets."

Liberal Democrat councillor for Callowland ward Ian Stotesbury said: "The petition so far has generated a massive response and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported it.

"At the moment, it just isn’t fair that Watford commuters have to pay so much more than other place for a journey of a similar distance. Watford stations are split across three zones. We need all stations to be bought into Zone 6, which would make the system fairer."
